‘Mind-boggling’ Mission Impossible with almost perfect rating on Film 4 tonight | Films | Entertainment
Tom Cruise is back in action as Ethan Hunt in the latest adrenaline-fuelled chapter of the Mission Impossible series, set to air on Film 4 tonight.
Known for his commitment to performing his own stunts, the Hollywood icon takes it up a notch in the seventh instalment, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One.
Released in 2023 to rave reviews and applause from even first-time viewers, the film was a box office sensation, amassing a staggering $571.1 million globally.
With a jaw-dropping budget of $291 million, making it one of the most costly films ever produced, this Mission Impossible venture was helmed by Christopher McQuarrie and features Cruise reprising his role as the indomitable protagonist.
He’s joined by familiar faces Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Hayley Atwell as thief Grace and Ethan’s new ally, and Rebecca Ferguson as the disenchanted MI6 agent turned member of Hunt’s squad, Ilsa Faust.
Following on from the events of Mission Impossible: Fallout, Ethan and his team are tasked with locating a horrifying new weapon that could pose an existential threat to humanity. The ensuing two and a half hours are packed with the kind of high-stakes excitement only Mission Impossible can deliver.
The picture earned recognition with two Academy Award nominations, marking the first time any entry in the franchise had secured Oscar nods. It also garnered a Golden Globe nomination, reports the Mirror.
Both audiences and reviewers lavished acclaim upon this particular instalment. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One boasts a stellar 96 per cent approval rating on the film review aggregation platform, Rotten Tomatoes.
One reviewer said: “Cruise’s action adventure is a triumph, full of physical jeopardy and Hollywood setpieces par excellence.”
A second critic added: “The movies are built around death-defying showcases of suspense and bravado that grow increasingly more mind-boggling with each sequel.”
Meanwhile, a third wrote: “The action is so extraordinary (and surprisingly, at times, really really funny) throughout this epic, gasp-inducing global adventure that any hesitation to recommend would be a disservice to the spirit of excitement that movies so rarely achieve anymore.”
Cinema-goers proved equally enthralled by the production. One enthusiast wrote: “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is an epic, amazing spy thriller with beautifully shot locations, amazing stunts, set pieces, action, and great performances from its amazing cast.”
Another viewer said: “Amazing movie all around. This had me so excited for the next one after this movie came out. The motorcycle scene and driving were so good in getting your attention.”
However, not every viewer believed this instalment matched the standard of its predecessors.
One disgruntled fan said: “My god what a waste of nearly three hours of my life. With some of the previous movies the action sequences saved the day, but clearly the cupboard was bare this time. Fighting on top of a train? ? Really? !”.
Another viewer expressed their disappointment: “Truly horrible. An implausible plot. Action scenes that defy physics. Casting choices chock full of DEI. Rediculous lengthy dialog while the clock is ticking down to zero. I hope this is the last Mission Impossible because what will the next one be?”.
You can form your own opinion about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One as the film will be broadcast on Film 4 at 9pm on Boxing Day, December 26.
