If someone’s home smells Christmassy, it can really put you in the mood for all the festivities that are to come. It’s such an exciting time of year, and there’s no reason you can’t make your home feel all cosy and smell amazing too.

As we approach the Christmas period, you’ll be, no doubt, be expecting more guests than usual, and is there a bigger compliment than ‘your house smells amazing?’

Lynsey Crombie, aka the Queen of Clean, has shared some easy ways to ensure your home smells not just fresh, but stunningly festive all December long.

She said: “There’s nothing quite like walking into a home that smells beautifully festive.

“From the freshness of pine to the warmth of cinnamon, the right scents can instantly transform your space into a cosy Christmas haven.

“Here are my favourite, tried-and-tested ways to fill your home with the magic of the season.”

Christmas tree scent sticks

If you adore the smell of a real Christmas tree but not the needles and the constant watering, scent sticks are a brilliant alternative. Simply pop a few onto the branches, real or artificial, and within minutes, your living room will smell wonderfully Christmassy. Even better, they last for weeks.

Switch candles and diffusers to festive scents

Now is the perfect time to put away those autumn fragrances and bring out seasonal candles. Look for scents like:

  • Spiced orange

  • Cinnamon & clove

  • Gingerbread

  • Frosted pine

  • Mulled wine

Place them in high-traffic spots so the fragrance travels through your home.

Essential oils in the bathroom

Bathrooms can lose freshness easily over winter, especially with windows shut. A few drops of essential oil can make all the difference. My favourite festive blends are:

Add the oils to toilet roll tubes, pop them on cotton pads behind the toilet, or use a diffuser for a long-lasting scent.

If you have pets, make sure that these essential oils are pet-friendly before you use them.

Simmer pots on the hob

One of my all-time favourite winter tricks! Simmer pots are natural, eco-friendly, and fill your home with the most gorgeous fragrance.

Try this festive mix:

  • Orange slices

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Star anise

  • Cranberries

  • A splash of vanilla

Let it gently simmer, and your kitchen will smell like Christmas in minutes.

Freshen up soft furnishings

Blankets, cushions and Christmas throws can hold onto smells. A quick refresh makes a huge difference.

  • Spray fabrics with a pine or cinnamon-scented spray

  • Wash throws using a winter-scented laundry booster

  • Place a diffuser nearby so soft furnishings subtly absorb the fragrance

Bake something festive

Nothing beats the smell of festive baking. Even a simple cinnamon cookie or gingerbread kit will fill your home with that warm, nostalgic Christmas aroma, plus you get a delicious treat afterwards!

Pinecones infused with essential oils

Collect a few pinecones, add a few drops of essential oil, and display them in a decorative bowl. They work as natural diffusers and double up as a lovely winter decoration.

Make sure you keep your home clean

A clean home always smells better. Empty bins regularly, flush drains with boiling water and lemon, and vacuum soft furnishings. A fresh base helps festive scents linger longer and smell stronger.

With a few simple tricks, you can create a home that looks and smells magical all season long. Happy scenting!
