Milk will go off ‘more quickly’ if stored in 1 area of fridge
Whether you like a splash of milk in your tea, make coffee with it, or even like an iced glass in the evening, milk is a staple in most people’s fridges. Whether you have cow’s milk, oat, soy, or any other alternative, there are many different ways to enjoy milk.
However, it’s bad news for you if you’re storing your milk in the fridge door. It might be easiest to grab, but could mean your bottle is going off much faster than it needs to be.
TikTok user @costoflivingcrisistips shared a hack to save money, and it’s all to do with where you store your milk within the fridge.
They claimed you shouldn’t be storing milk in the door because “when you open the fridge door, it pulls away from the cool air, affecting the freshness”.
Instead, you should “put it at the back of the fridge” to “make it last longer”.
This is because temperatures in the fridge are inconsistent, and the door is the worst place for these inconsistencies.
Every time you open the fridge door, hot air naturally goes inside, and the door is the first place that gets hit by it. So this means the temperature of the milk will go up and down, depending on how many times you go in the fridge each day.
This means the milk could spoil faster if kept in the door, and warmer temperatures can also mean bacteria has an opportunity to grow.
When it comes to things that will be fine in the fridge door, consider items like condiments and bottled drinks like water. They won’t spoil if they’re subjected to a little bit of warm heat in the same way that milk will.
Milk should be stored at around 2 to 4 degrees for optimum storage.
Plus, when you’ve finished with your milk, it’s vital you return it to the fridge as soon as possible, for the same reason you shouldn’t store it in the door.
And, to reiterate, this counts for non-dairy milks as well to prevent harmful bacteria growth.
In the comments of the TikTok, some said that milk in their house “doesn’t last long enough” for it to go “bad”.
Another said: “But the door is open for like 2 seconds, maybe 10 depending on what you go in for but usually it’s shut straight away”. Others claimed it wasn’t “that deep”.
However, others pointed out their fridge “isn’t big enough” to do this, so it “has to go in the door”.
