Limescale in the kettle quickly dissolves within minutes with 1 item – not lemon

A household staple known for its natural cleaning power has been hailed as a fast and effective solution for tackling stubborn kettle limescale, and it works in minutes.

Writer Chanelle Georgina tested the simple trick after previously trying the traditional lemon method, which involves boiling chopped lemons, leaving them to sit for hours, and scrubbing away residue. While that technique worked, she found it time-consuming and was searching for a quicker alternative.

The solution turned out to be citric acid, a natural compound often used in cleaning products and food preservation. Unlike the lemon approach, using citric acid requires minimal effort and delivers impressive results in just 10 minutes.

To use the method, Georgina filled her kettle with water, added two scoops of citric acid, and brought it to a boil.

After leaving the mixture to sit for around 10 minutes, she poured it out to find that most of the limescale had dissolved, without the need for any scrubbing.

She used Elbow Grease Citric Acid, which can be found in major retailers such as Asda, Ocado, and B&Q. After a few quick rinses, the kettle was clean and ready for use again.

Citric acid is increasingly being recognised as a multi-purpose cleaning powerhouse. According to the product’s packaging, it can also be used to clean coffee machines, steam irons, and shower heads, as well as to degrease kitchenware and remove rust from metal surfaces.

The ingredient works by breaking down mineral deposits left by hard water, a common issue across many parts of the UK. Unlike harsher chemical cleaners, citric acid is biodegradable, odourless, and food-safe, making it an appealing option for eco-conscious households.

With limescale build-up affecting the performance and lifespan of kettles, experts say regular descaling can improve energy efficiency and keep appliances running smoothly.
