‘I decluttered my home without my family noticing’

Keeping your home decluttered can be a battle, especially if you’ve got a big family. One Reddit user revealed how they decided enough was enough after seeing their wife’s clothes, old broken toys belonging to their two children, and countless other items strewn around their home.

Even driving into their garage had become difficult, with the user describing it as “like a game of Tetris”. They explained how they had slowly cleared up unwanted or broken items and left them out to be collected with their usual household rubbish over the space of eight weeks. Calling it ‘Operation: Silent Declutter‘, the user said neither their wife nor children had shown any sign of catching on.

“So… I live in a cozy (read: claustrophobic) townhouse with my wife and two kids,” they wrote. “Lovely family, except my wife has a deep emotional connection with… everything.

“Old clothes? Memories maybe. Kids’ broken toys? Someday we’ll fix them.

“Meanwhile, I’m trying to park my car in the garage like it’s a game of Tetris. So I snapped.

“I declared myself the guy who takes the trash out. For the next 8 weeks, I ran Operation: Silent Declutter.

“Every biweekly garbage day, I made two bags: One for the actual trash. One for… let’s call it ‘future trash’. I mixed them in strategically. One extra bag at a time. Consistently.

“Fast forward two months — I can breathe. The garage door closes without resistance.

“No one has noticed. Not. A. Single. Thing. Ask me anything about how to declutter your house without getting divorced.”

Commenters were divided, with many expressing admiration, and others sharing their own tips. One wrote: “The hardest part is getting started. I started with my clothes. I washed everything and as it came out I made two piles. Stuff I actively wear and stuff I don’t.

“Then I applied the same logic to everything else. ‘Do I actually use this?’ When was the last time I went camping? Got rid of that camping gear. I don’t actually play my old games. Got rid of them.

“Just pick a spot to start and ask ‘Do I need this?’ for each item. Once you get started it gets easier and easier.”

However, others questioned the poster’s approach of throwing things belonging to their wife away without asking her first. One wrote: “So you threw away items that had sentimental value for your wife and you didn’t tell her or give her the option to save those item?”

But the poster replied: “I am pretty sure none of the items had any sentimental values. 90% of them were from dollar stores and random Shein haul.”

Another user said: “Everything has sentimental value to hoarders. I imagine OP (the original poster) has the wherewithal to understand the difference between his wife’s precious family heirlooms and a broken plastic comb from Temu.”
