Margot Robbie had one condition for Barbie casting | Films | Entertainment
Barbie fans are patiently awaiting the release of the live-action doll movie starring Margot Robbie, but it was almost extremely different.
The upcoming Mattel movie is promising to break boundaries with strong feminist vibes, neon pink personas and endless jokes throughout.
And in a new interview, Robbie explained that the many Barbie versions in the movie are one of the key reasons she agreed to join the picture.
Speaking to Time Magazine, Robbie revealed she was “flattered” toy company Mattel thought of her to join the Barbie movie, but would not have joined if the picture did not include a number of other Barbies of different shapes and sizes.
“If [Mattel] hadn’t made that change to have a multiplicity of Barbies,” she said. “I don’t think I would have wanted to attempt to make a Barbie film.”
Robbie explained that it all came down to representation and being fair to her audience.
As a tall slender blonde woman who has modelled in the past, it was important to her to have other kinds of women in the movie.
Ultimately, she explained, she didn’t want people seeing just one type of Barbie and expecting that to be the “perfect” aspiration for young women around the world.
Coral’s John Hill said: “Super Mario is on 6/4. That is obviously the early front runner, but with the buzz and anticipation around Barbie, we think it could smash all records for 2023, so have given that movie odds of 1/2.”
Could Robbie’s representation stipulation help inch towards this goal once it hits cinemas? I bet it will.
Barbie hits cinemas on July 21, 2023.
