UK households urged to tackle the ‘6 jobs we put off the most’

Homeowners across the UK are being urged to stop putting off simple maintenance tasks as new research reveals the top six jobs we avoid most, with blocked gutters topping the list and leaky taps coming in second.

The survey by Barratt Homes found that just one in four homeowners feel confident maintaining their property, while 37% admit they regularly skip cleaning their gutters. With autumn leaves and moss clogging drains, experts warn that ignoring this job could lead to roof leaks, damp, and even infestations over winter.

“Blocked gutters stop rainwater draining properly, causing leaks and damp inside your home,” said Rhoddy MacKinnon, Construction Director at Barratt Homes. “Clearing them out before winter is one of the simplest ways to protect your property.”

The research also revealed the six most avoided home maintenance tasks:

  1. Cleaning gutters (37%)

  2. Fixing a leaky tap (27%)

  3. Replacing missing tiles (25%)

  4. Fixing a wobbly toilet seat (24%)

  5. Bleeding radiators (24%)

  6. Repairing squeaky doors or loose floorboards (23%)

MacKinnon said the findings highlight a growing lack of confidence in DIY. “DIY skills were traditionally passed down through generations, but that chain has started to break. Many people simply don’t know where to start, or fear making things worse,” he explained.

The study also found that 72% of homeowners rely on professionals or family members for repairs, while nearly 40% would rather replace faulty appliances than attempt a fix.

As winter approaches, Barratt Homes is urging households to set aside a weekend to tackle these small but important jobs — before they turn into costly problems.
