A film student has been caught off guard by a Netflix series they’ve quickly become “hooked” on and now they’re urging others to give it a “chance” for themselves. The streaming platform has a vast array of films and television shows to choose from, with a ranking system on the homepage allowing subscribers to know what options have cracked the top 10.

One show that’s proving popular is My Life with the Walter Boys, which premiered on Netflix in December 2023. The teen drama series centres on lead character Jackie Howard, after she moves to rural Colorado from Manhattan after her parents and sister are killed in a car accident.

Jackie goes to live with the Walter family – made up of husband and wife, Katherine and George Walter, and their six biological sons and one daughter.

So far, two seasons have aired on Netflix with a third in the works. The third season is expected to arrive on screens in 2026.

Despite being a teen drama, the show appears to be a hit among all ages.

A film student took to Reddit to share their surprise over their enjoyment of the show, tuning in after a professor analysed the show in one of their classes.

The student penned: “I’m a college student studying Film and Television production and I discovered this show through my professor who did an analysis of it in class and now I’m hooked [to be honest].

“This show has something for everyone, it has the teen romance drama and I have to admit that’s not what draws me in. It has great character work. Both in the teen characters and the adults.

“They create multi-layered performances that feel real and I can say for people like Alex, George, Kathrine, Nathan Danny and Cole. I’ve known people like them in my everyday life.

“The actors do a great job of making them believable.”

The student also resonated on a personal level with many aspects of the show, including the fact the family has a ranch, and the responsibility patriarch George feels, as well as son Alex.

They shared: “This is a great cast who does fantastic work but I find myself connecting most with the characters of Alex and George.

“I had to be responsible for my family in elementary school and High School and I love George’s struggle with wanting to preserve his land while at the same time wanting to provide and secure his family’s future.

“I encourage a lot of people to give this show a chance. I think a lot of the actors on this show have a big future.”

In the comments section, the review seemed to resonate with another Netflix fan who shared: “I’ve never considered watching it in all honesty but I’m tempted to give it a go now!

“Wasn’t sure if it would be a bit ‘young’ but the in-depth characters is definitely appealing.”
