Grupo Frontera to Make Grand Ole Opry Debut
The boys from Rio Grande Valley are heading to Nashville. On Wednesday evening, Grupo Frontera announced that they’ll be making their Grand Ole Opry debut on Nov. 7 as part of the storied institution’s centennial celebration.
”My people… we are very excited to make our @Opry debut!! This November 7, we’re bringing our sound to Nashville,” the norteño-cumbia band wrote on Instagram. “It’ll be a show in pure Frontera style.”
Frontera leaned into country influences on their latest record, Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada, and told Rolling Stone that they were inspired by George Strait and Morgan Wallen on the record.
The band even sprinkled in pedal steel on their country-flecked rendition of “Hecha Pa’ Mí” for NPR’s Tiny Desk back in April. They played around with a country-reggae fusion on “Por Qué Será” during that performance too.
“We’re a band that can play different styles, and all of us have different music tastes. Some of us like rap, R&B, country,” frontman Payo Solís told Variety in May 2024. “We felt now, with putting out a second album, was the perfect time to experiment, and create something for everyone to enjoy.”
Frontera’s performance comes nearly two years after Carin León, the música mexicana heavyweight who has forayed into country music effortlessly, made history with his Opry debut in February 2024.
The upcoming perforamnce from Frontera follows the group’s collaborations with Ozuna on “No Lo Ves,” Grupo Firme on “Modo Difícil,” Xavi on “No Capea,” and Ryan Castro on “Apodo.”
Frontera’s Opry debut follows that of Sabrina Carpenter, who played a four-song set on the famous country-music stage this week, including PG-rated versions of “Please Please Please” and “Manchild.”
