Wildlife park makes ‘heartbreaking’ decision to close gates after 17 years

Axe Valley Wildlife Park, a family-run zoo in Axminster, East Devon, has announced it will be closing its doors after 17 years due to financial difficulties. In a heartfelt Facebook post that has been shared over 240 times, the zoo revealed: “It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news. Our much-loved family zoo will be closing on Friday, October 10, 2025. As many of you may have heard in the news, we are not the only business facing these difficult times.

“Unfortunately, it has become financially unviable for us to continue operating.” Reflecting on their journey, they added: “When we opened our gates 17 years ago, we could never have imagined the wonderful journey ahead, the thousands of amazing visitors, school trips, and loyal members who became part of our zoo family. We are so proud of the wide variety of animals we’ve cared for over the years, each one holding a special place in our hearts (we know many of you have your favourites, too!)”

They reassured fans by saying: “Please rest assured that all of our animals will be rehomed safely and responsibly, in full compliance with animal welfare rules and procedures.”

The post went on to say: “We also want to take this moment to thank our incredible staff and volunteers, past and present, who have worked tirelessly with love, dedication, and passion to care for our animals and welcome our visitors. We truly couldn’t have done it without you.

“If you hold a membership with us, we will happily offer a refund for any remaining months. Please see our website for all the details on how to do this.

“From all of us here, thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the love you’ve shared with our animals and team. You’ve made the past 17 years truly unforgettable.”

Devotees of the East Devon zoo were quick to express their disappointment and share fond memories of past visits.

One remarked: “I’m so sad about this news. You created such an incredible place to visit for our local community. I have many happy memories there from the past 10 years of living locally and having membership.”

Another added: “Such a heartbreaking decision for you to have had to make. The park’s closure will be a huge loss to the community. Like many, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my visits over the last 17 years. Thank you for the memories.

“I’m so sad to hear this news. The children and I have absolutely loved coming to see you all every week and will miss you all so much,” a third said.
