Boox’s next smartphone-sized e-reader has a color screen and a stylus

Boox has shared more details about its next smartphone-sized e-reader through a series of posts on China’s Weibo. First teased at IFA 2025 last month with very limited hands-on opportunities, the new device will be called the Boox P6 Pro in China where it’s expected to launch on October 9th. It will feature a SIM card tray so, unlike the Boox Palma devices, it won’t be solely dependent on Wi-Fi, and will be available with either a color or black-and-white E Ink screen. Pricing and global availability details have yet to be announced.

The full technical specifications for each version have also yet to be revealed, but the color version of the P6 Pro will feature a 16MP camera on the back – which is mostly useful for digitizing documents – as well as 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. That can be expanded to up to 2TB using the device’s hybrid SIM card tray that can also accommodate a microSD memory card.

But it’s not yet known if the P6 Pro will be a true smartphone replacement like the Bigme Hibreak Pro that also features an E Ink screen. A mobile data connection will let you use apps like WhatsApp or Zoom while away from Wi-Fi, but in its teasers Boox has not mentioned if the P6 Pro will be capable of making cellular phone calls or sending SMS messages.

Based on our time with the color version of the P6 Pro at IFA 2025, its limited color reproduction capabilities seem to indicate it’s using the same E Ink Kaleido 3 display found in devices like the Kobo Libra Colour that’s limited to just 4,096 colors. If that’s the case, black-and-white content will be displayed at 300ppi while color will be limited to 150ppi as a result of how the Kaleido 3 technology works. But both versions of the Boox P6 Pro will have an adjustable front light with color temperature adjustments and a light sensor.

The P6 Pro will also be Boox’s first smartphone-sized e-reader with stylus support – a feature the company already offers on many of its larger e-readers and electronic notebooks. It’s not yet known if the note-taking experience will be as polished and fluid as what’s offered by the similarly-sized Remarkable Paper Pro Move. That will partly depend on what processor Boox is using. But the P6 Pro’s big advantage will be flexibility since it runs Android and has full access to the Google Play Store, letting you choose exactly what note-taking app you prefer, or where you want to buy your ebooks.
