Lana Del Rey dropped her new country-tinged single “Bluebird” on Friday and shared a story about how the song was inspired by a real-life bird that brought her a sign she should have listened to.

“I had been seeing someone for a very long time, and we hadn’t seen each other for a while, and he called and he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk,” said Del Rey in a selfie video from her car. “And I was kind of excited, but I didn’t think it was a very good idea. And I said yes, and I started getting dressed, and all of a sudden, a bird smacked in the double pane window doors of my bedroom, and I was shocked.”

She added: “I opened the little door and I saw this little I think it was like… little swallow right there. And I just was so emotional. Because, you know when you just know that, something is meant for you, like, sometimes I feel like nature has its own way of communicating with you, especially in extremely severe situations.”

Del Rey explained that she picked up the bird and held it while kneeling and started to sing “Little bird, bluebird/Fly away for both of us,” lyrics that are included in the song.

“I kept singing, and it did eventually kind of stumble away and dizzily flew up onto the little podium that there was there,” Del Rey said, before admitting that she did end up going on the walk with the person she had been seeing. “I didn’t really like [how] the walk led to more years of confusion,” she added.

On “Bluebird,” Del Rey sings about a volatile relationship as she sings to both the bird and to herself: “Find some strength inside my hand/Anything to let you sing goodbye.” Del Rey concluded the video by sharing that this wasn’t the first time that a bird has a “little bit of a message for me.” Under the post, Del Rey’s father Robert Grant left a comment, writing: “Love that story! And you have many more involving owls & other critters that have messages & meaning!”

The track follows last week’s “Henry, Come On,” both of which precede her performance at Stagecoach, where she’ll play a set of country songs. She recently told fans of playing Stagecoach for the first time, “It’s not lost on me about how amazing it is that we got to headline Coachella last year and that we get to sing at the top of the night at Stagecoach on the smaller stage this year. My band is so excited. I’m really excited, and I’m really happy for this album to be moving along.”
