A canine behaviourist has named the three breeds of dog first-time owners should avoid. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility, and each breed has its own exercise, socialisation, and grooming needs.

While some breeds are very beginner-friendly, others are more suited to owners with more experience or more time on their hands to dedicate to training. Posting to TikTok, behaviourist Will Atherton shared his take on the subject with his 956,000 followers. He explained: “These are the three dog breeds that I think first-time owners should never get and as a canine behaviourist, I see people get things wrong with their dogs every single day and I’m here to help in that situation.

“I see the breeds that people are getting that are leading to those problems.”

His first pick was the Belgian Malinois, a breed he described as one of the “key culprits” for the problems he’s seeing right now.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Belgian Malinois is a “smart, confident and versatile” dog capable of building an “unbreakable” bond with its owner.

Commenting on why he wouldn’t recommend the breed for first-time owners, Will said: “They’re capable of insane feats, but to be able to achieve that level of success you have to be one of the best dog trainers in the world with years of skill and experience.”

“The Border Collie absolutely fits into that category as well,” he continued.

“If you don’t know how to handle a dog that is bred to work non-stop and is one of the most intelligent animals on the planet, they will run all over you.”

Will also recommended that novice dog owners steer clear of Working Cocker Spaniels.

Bred for their working capabilities, Working Cocker Spaniels are known for their high energy, stamina and hunting and retrieving abilities.

The behaviourist said: “And last but not least, I’m seeing people make huge mistakes with working line cocker spaniels.

“Yes, they are adorable, they look beautiful, but they are insanely high drive, insanely high energy and rarely fit into people’s normal lives. If you want a spaniel, do yourself a favour and get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel instead.”
