The weather has been quite pleasant this April, prompting some to reach for their suncream. While it’s essential for skin protection, getting it on your clothes can be a hassle.

Fashion gurus at Crew Clothing have shared their best advice for eliminating suncream stains from garments as families bask in the Easter holidays and plan summer getaways.

Sunscreen contains specific oils designed to absorb UV rays. While these are vital for shielding against the sun, they can easily result in yellow or orange grease marks.

The most commonly used chemical in suncream is avobenzone, which can create rust-coloured stains when mixed with water or sweat.

Removing suncream with household items

Lemon juice and vinegar

One of the simplest methods to eradicate suncream stains from clothing involves items many of us already have in our kitchen cupboards. From vinegar to lemon juice, the hashtag #lemoncleaninghack has amassed over 152,000 views as homeowners seek out alternative, eco-friendly stain removal techniques.

When it comes to stains, speed is of the essence. If you find sunscreen on your clothes, swiftly apply an acidic substance like white vinegar or lemon juice and sprinkle with salt.

This combination tackles the oil and draws it out from the material. After application, let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes; ideally, leave it overnight before washing as usual.

Eucalyptus Oil

The #Eucalyptusoilstainremoval hack has taken TikTok by storm, amassing 1.2 million views, offering a simple solution to eradicate sunscreen marks from both white and coloured fabrics. Eucalyptus oil, renowned for removing tough stains, should be a staple in your cleaning arsenal.

Dampen the affected clothing with cold water, then lavish the stain with eucalyptus oil. Gently work the oil into the fabric and proceed to wash it on a cold cycle. This method stops the stain from becoming permanent and ensures it comes out effortlessly.

Baking soda and dishwashing liquid

With “does baking soda remove stains” garnering 1,100 monthly searches, this household favourite is ideal for tackling suncream blemishes. When mixed with dish soap, it forms one of the most effective and speedy duos for suncream stain removal.

Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, one teaspoon of baking soda and warm water in a spray bottle. Proceed to spray the stained garment with this cleaning concoction, gently dabbing and rubbing at any stains.

Allow it to dry before washing it on a cool cycle and hanging it outside to dry. The sun serves as an extra aid in brightening any white clothing.
