Fans fell in love with the piano ballad when the musician debuted it in London — now she’s putting out an official recording of that performance

Gracie Abrams announced via Instagram that she’s dropping an official recording of “Death Wish,” a gorgeous, wistful piano ballad that became an instant fan favorite despite being played just once so far — at London’s O2 Arena earlier this month. The released version was captured live at that performance.

“Thank you to everyone who was in the room that night,” Abrams wrote. “I love you and I miss you and maybe you’ll be able to hear yourself in the recording.”

That night, sitting at a piano at the B-stage intended to emulate the bedroom where she writes most of her songs, she said the song was about a friend who was “dating a mega-narcissist.” “But how will it end,” she sings in the chorus. “How long will you give me/’Til you twist the knife with a smile while you kill me/And you ask me to dance if there’s someone around/You don’t look the same when I look at you now.”

Abrams is currently on tour behind her second album, The Secret of Us, which dropped in June. The tour runs through Aug. 25, with upcoming dates at venues including Madison Square Garden and festival appearances at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. She also recently debuted “Cold Goodbyes,” a track she said she wrote in December.
