‘I heard a noise in my car boot – what I found made my blood run cold’

This woman got the fright of her life after opening up her car boot.

What would you do if you heard noises coming from your car boot while you were driving? It’s a scary thought, especially if you’re driving by yourself and you have no idea what could be making the strange sounds.

But that is exactly what happened to one woman who has been going viral after she had to stop and call her friend when she heard scratching noises coming from the boot of her car. When she opened it to investigate, she got the fright of her life.

Iyla shared a video on TikTok in which she explained that her unnamed friend had messaged her to help her investigate what was lurking in her boot.

Together, they hesitantly opened the boot and took a step back to prepare themselves – and let out gasps of horror when they saw what had been making the terrifying noise.

Iyla’s video shows the car boot being opened before a huge rat scurries behind some shopping bags, causing the woman to gasp in shock. She then moves to get a better look at the rodent, at which point it darts out from under cover.

For a moment, it looks as though the rat might leap out of the boot, but it instead tucks itself under some clothes that were left in the back of the car.

Iyla then mumbles, “Oh my god”, and the video ends – with the rat still making the car boot its home and the two friends are left with the predicament of how to get it out.

Commenters on the post were equally horrified for Iyla and her friend, as many joked they would have to “get a new car” rather than deal with the rodent in the boot.

Others, however, urged the woman to have her car properly checked by mechanics as rats and other rodents can chew through wires and make things very costly – as well as dangerous.

One person said: “I had this last month – it ate the indicator cable on my EV – [very expensive] to fix. After driving with five traps, a WiFi camera and a bait box in the boot, he was caught outside near the fence. It came from a neighbour!”

Another added: “Happened to me. I went to top up the water in my car, and when I lifted the lid, there was a huge rat sitting on the engine. The whole street heard me scream.”

A third also shared: “Girl, check your engine. They like to chew through wires because the heat of the car. Please check. This caused our breaks to fail!”
