Two professors were among the 70 people killed Thursday in a series of Israeli airstrikes that hit the southern suburbs of Beirut and southern Lebanon, The Guardian reported

The two academics—chemist and physicist Hussein Bazzi and physics professor Mortada Srour—worked at Lebanese University, the only state-funded public university in Lebanon. According to L’Orient Today, Israel allegedly targeted the two men for their political ties; the publication reported that the Israeli army accused Srour of being “a member of Hezbollah’s aerial unit.” It also alleged that Bazzi was affiliated with the Amal movement in Lebanon.

Lebanese University’s president, Joseph Aoun, called Thursday’s attacks a “flagrant violation of international laws and norms.”
