12 micro-workouts for time-strapped parents to do at home

Parents are increasingly seeking out micro-workouts as they grapple with finding time for exercise amidst their busy schedules. A whopping seven in 10 parents are on the hunt for quick workouts that can be squeezed in between chores and other tasks.

Due to their hectic lifestyles, 71% of parents are exploring alternatives to traditional gym and leisure centre workouts. Parents estimate that they have approximately 38 minutes each day that could be utilised for fitness activities in between chores and other tasks.

Research reveals that 47% of parents with children under 18 see the time spent waiting for food to cook as an ideal opportunity for a micro-workout. Additionally, 35% believe they could fit in a quick workout while waiting for the washing to finish.

Other opportune moments include brushing their teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil.

Interestingly, nearly four in 10 have used household items such as bags of sugar or mugs for a quick workout. In response to these findings, Matalan has partnered with fitness icon Mr Motivator to develop a series of exercises that busy parents can perform throughout the day.

Dubbed the ‘Daily Dozen’, the 12-move routine includes a water bottle bicep curl, laundry basket upright row, and a dining chair squat.

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day, it’s just a matter of learning how to use them most effectively,” stated the vibrant fitness guru. “It may not sound like much, but even one single minute of activity can make a real difference.”

He continued: “The good thing about exercise is, it builds up you start with one minute, then you find yourself going up to five, and before long you’re picking up some really healthy habits.”

“The ‘Daily Dozen’ workouts I’ve come up with are 12 simple exercises that can be completed regularly around the home, to suit almost anybody.”

The study revealed that parents prefer exercising at home rather than at a gym or leisure centre, with 71% claiming they are too exhausted for a full workout due to their hectic schedules.

A spokesperson for Matalan commented: “Parents often prioritise their families over themselves, but even a few minutes of physical activity can recharge the mind and body.”

“Incorporating short, manageable workouts into your day is a powerful way to stay healthy.

“Every little effort, from a quick home workout to a brisk stroll, contributes to better health and well-being.”
