A vet has issued a serious warning to dog owners about a common error that could be worsen their pet’s separation anxiety.
Amir Anwary cautioned that certain well-intentioned behaviours may actually amplify the issue – creating unnecessary stress for both owners and their dogs.
In a video posted on TikTok, the vet outlined the mistakes many pet owners make and described how they can inadvertently compound daily routines whilst reinforcing anxious behaviour.
He said: “Separation anxiety in dogs can be a common challenge for pet owners, but understanding how to address it effectively can make all the difference.
“Many owners inadvertently contribute to their dog’s anxiety, leading to a cycle of distress. Recognising and correcting these mistakes is crucial to providing a supportive environment for your furry friend.
“One of the most important steps is to avoid making a big deal out of arrivals and departures. When you leave or return home, try to remain calm and low-key.
“This helps your dog understand that coming and going is a normal part of life, reducing their anxiety,” said the expert.
However, this isn’t the sole step owners can implement. Establishing a consistent routine can also provide dogs with a sense of security, as they learn what to anticipate throughout the day..
He added: “Introducing engaging toys or puzzles can also serve as a distraction during times of separation.
“This helps divert their attention and can ease feelings of loneliness. Positive reinforcement training is another valuable tool in your arsenal.”
In addition to this, rewarding a dog for calm behaviour when you’re departing – or whilst they are alone – can reinforce the notion that solitude is not something to be feared.
He stated: “It’s important to remember that patience and consistency are key. Making small adjustments over time can lead to significant improvements in your dog’s comfort level when left alone.
“If you find that the anxiety persists, consulting with a veterinarian or a professional dog trainer could provide additional strategies tailored to your dog’s specific needs.
“By being aware of the common pitfalls and taking steps towards better management, you can help your dog navigate their anxiety more effectively.
“Be part of the solution, not the problem, and create a loving and supportive atmosphere for your dog.”
Reacting to his post, one user commented: “Thank you so much for making people aware of what to do and not to do, as well as all the laughs you bring us!”.
Another said: “My dogs get excited when I put my shoes on. They know they’ll get their special high-value treat that’s only given when I leave the house.”
A third person added: “My dog had separation anxiety. I did this and now he couldn’t care less if we leave. Leave the house. Say ‘see you later’ or ‘guard the house’. No pets. No hugs. No big deal. Leave him for a short time. When you come home, say nothing.
“If he is excited and jumping around, say nothing. When he settles, say ‘good boy’ and just go back to doing things.
“Leave him for short periods to start. Increase gradually. Now when we come home, our Paco often just lifts his head from the couch and that’s it. Perfectly comfortable with us leaving.”
Another user added: “My dog is very attached to me. How do I prepare him for a holiday I’m going on in a few months?”.
“I’m worried because he is super shy. He is crate-trained at night and when I’m gone for short periods of time.”
